St. John is a pristine piece of paradise due in part to most of the land, and some of the beaches, partitioned into a protected area known as St. John National Park. This area was set aside decades ago to ensure the island stayed immaculate and people could camp, hike, and enjoy the beaches of this island gem. Unfortunately we were unable to make it to most of the beaches since we split our time between St. Thomas and St. John, so here are our top 3 picks. Because they are all picturesque, they are listed in no particular order. We also left 'relaxing' out of all of our 'beach vibe' descriptions because none of these beaches were anything but relaxing.
TRUNK BAY

Beach Vibe: Idyllic (also a tourist hot spot depending on cruise ships)
Entry Fee: $5
Location: Northshore
The Magens Bay of St. John, this beach boasts plenty of white sand, crystal clear blue waters, amenities, and is a definite tourist attraction. Trunk Bay is best for soaking up the sun and taking in the views. If you can manage to take your eyes off of the electric blue water you will find a beach bar/grill, a shop that sells souvenirs and sunscreen, chair and snorkel rentals, and restroom/changing areas. However, you’ll want to post up near the entrance of the beach to take advantage of these amenities so your walk on the sand isn’t too long. If you’re looking for a more secluded experience, we would advise to go as far to the left (west) from the entrance as possible. There is an underwater snorkel trail that makes it’s way around Trunk Cay if you’re in need of more activity than catching rays or soaking in the warm water.

CINNAMON BAY

Beach Vibe: Scenic
Entry fee: None
Location: Northshore
This beach is the longest beach on St. John (1/2 mile) and one of the widest, which means crowding is kept to a minimum. As always, snorkeling is an entertaining activity, especially close to the small cay not far off shore. There used to be kayak rentals and camping, but sadly hurricanes Irma and Maria did their fair share of damage in 2017, and this beach is still getting back on it’s feet. This location is great for taking in the views of not only the turquoise water, but the mansions on the west side hills and the cays in the distance. Cinnamon makes for a beautiful place to take in a sunset as well.
HAWKSNEST

Beach Vibe: Snorkel
Entry Fee: None
Location: North shore
Shade is a bit scarce, so if you’re not an early bird, you may miss out on space under the sea grape trees. Otherwise, this beach is easy to get to, and once you’re there you will not be disappointed. Beautiful blue water and a lack of people make this spot a great pick. Snorkeling is a great activity, but if you don’t feel like getting your hair wet, we were able to spot a sting ray that come right up to the shoreline while we were lounging on the sand. Just watch your step as the particular one that was witnessed liked to bury itself in the sand.
